Publié en 1949, ce roman est le dernier ouvrage majeur de la romancière terre-neuvienne Margaret Duley. Elle l’a composé en s’appuyant sur ses expériences en tant que bénévole dans une auberge qui accueillait les soldats arrivant au port de St-Jean-de-Terre-Neuve, pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. L’œuvre dépeint les turbulences et l’excitation qui régnaient à St-Jean en temps de guerre de même que les activités de cet auberge qui a diverti, nourri et hébergé environ 16 000 soldats en 19461. Elle a également écrit une nouvelle, au cours de cette période, intitulée Sea Dust et qui met en vedette un chat de bateau rescapé des plages de Dunkerque.

This is a history of the wartime hostel the Caribou Hut in St. John’s, Newfoundland, which was created to restore order to a city thrown into upheaval by the influx of soldiers and sailors from many allied countries. The book describes how the Second World War affected the city of St. John’s, and provides a glimpse into the lives of the men who stayed at the Caribou Hut and the many people who volunteered there giving of themselves to make those staying at the hostel feel at home.
